All DISC profiles are based on what Dr. William Marston a 1920’s psychologist and self -help author, included in the research in his book, "Emotions of Normal People". DISC came, by design, from Marston's search for measurements of the energy of behavior and consciousness. Marston did not develop an assessment or test from his model, although others later did.
DISC represents the four behavioral descriptors Dr. Marston identified in his research of why “normal” people do what they do. His book "The Emotions of Normal People" revealed people’s patterns of behaviors and how these can predict one's needs-driven motivators. The amount of energy one typically invests in four areas of life, based on what's of interest to them, makes up their style pattern - or "DISC".

D is the acronym for Dominance of problems
D-style people are fast paced and task focused, who prefer to be in situations where they can be in charge and delegate tasks to others. S is the acronym for Steadiness of the pace of the environment S-style people move more cautiously and are people focused. Count on them to be systematic, patient, and persistent in nurturing teams, listening well and completing tasks others leave. |
I is the acronym for Influence
of people I-style people are fast paced and people focused and who love social situations, friendship, and communicating. C is the acronym for Compliance to procedures and rules C-style people are people who also move more cautiously, are task focused, and prefer being correct by knowing all the facts. |
No one is limited to their DISC style, because we all operate from each of the DISC dimensions and in differing levels of intensity depending on the situation we are in. The key is to know which one or two behavioral styles shows up most often to others. And then knowing ourselves so well that we can stand confidently in our most comfortable style and its strengths, in all our daily business or personal interactions.
